Gerri Greenham, President, Solarvest (P.E.I.) Inc.
Mr. Greenham has been active in the biotech industry since 1983 when he facilitated the acquisition from Connaught Laboratories of their biotech division to create Aqua Health Limited. Greenham acted as founder and subsequently President and CEO of the successor Company, Cobequid Life Sciences. Greenham was responsible for all aspects of operations for this firm, which was involved in the development, manufacture, licensing and sales of vaccines to the animal health industry. Aqua Health Limited products were licensed in over fifteen countries and the Company operated two current good manufacturing practice facilities. The Company participated in joint ventures, licensing and financing with large multinationals in the United Kingdom, Thailand and Switzerland and was subsequently acquired by Novartis in 2000. Since leaving his employment at Novartis in 2001, Mr. Greenham has sat on advisory boards and board of directors for small-cap public companies as well as operating a privately owned investment Company financing small companies.
Ken Cawkell, Director and Chair
Ken Cawkell is the managing partner of the law firm Cawkell Brodie Glaister LLP and has over twenty-five years’ experience in intellectual property law, technology transfer and all aspects of corporate structuring, finance and securities law. Cawkell is proficient in both public and private venture capital markets. He is an investor in and founder of a number of private firms where he has held executive management positions. Cawkell currently sits on the board of directors of a number of private and public TSX/ TSX-V companies where he has been a member of both the executive and board committees, including Chief Financial Officer responsibilities. He is actively involved in business in China and is a founding Principal of the Far East Group, based in Hong Kong, which is focused on identifying biotech opportunities in the Asian market and finding the appropriate Asian commercialization partners. Mr. Cawkell has participated as a lecturer in Continuing Legal Education seminars and is currently a member of the Securities Law Advisory Committee to the British Columbia Securities Commission.
Joseph Heng, Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Heng is a Chartered Accountant with over thirty years of industry experience in public accounting. He received his Chartered Accountant designation from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario in 1973. From 1973 to 1978, Heng worked in the public accounting industry and thereafter in the real estate development industry. Since 1990, he has applied his skills as a consultant in the field of accounting, tax and financing to small and medium size companies in various industries from manufacturing, retail, construction and junior mining companies.
Dr. Bill Cheliak, Board Member
Dr. Cheliak has a Ph.D in genetics and an undergraduate degree in Forestry, both from the University of Alberta and broad experience and familiarity with the field of biotechnology at the research and business levels. Dr. Cheliak’s areas of expertise include; forestry, aquaculture, human health in the fields of oncology and neurology, industrial-level viral and bacterial vaccine manufacture, expression systems, human genomics and ethics. Dr. Cheliak has led research teams and has successfully translated results and knowledge generated from research and development into businesses. He has closed numerous deals with big and small companies along with academic institutions and research hospitals. As well, Dr. Cheliak has gained considerable expertise in the translation of highly technical materials to non-specialists and lay audiences, including the investment and finance community.
Dr. Cheliak currently serves on the board of numerous biotechnology firms and organizations, including the federal government’s Networks of Centres of Excellence Standing Selection Committee. With this committee, as well as his prior experience, Cheliak has provided several committees with advice and recommendations to the Government of Canada on the funding of large national science and infrastructure programs.
Michael O’Brien, Board Member
Michael O’Brien was born in Summerside, Prince Edward Island and graduated from Saint Dunstan’s University in 1963 with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree. Between 2004 and 2006, Mr. O’Brien served as Provincial Deputy Minister of Development and Technology following serving seven years as provincial Deputy Treasurer. Previously, he was a general practice partner with Coopers & Lybrand, Chartered Accountants. In 1984, O’Brien was awarded his fellowship designation with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Prince Edward Island and is a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants. Since October of 2006 O’Brien has served on the Bank of Canada’s Board of Directors. He also currently serves as a member of the Atlantic Canada Venture Gateway Advisory Board. In 2011, Michael O’Brien was appointed Co-Chair of the Prince Edward Island Energy Commission. Mr. O’Brien’s long record of community work includes service as President of the United Way of Prince Edward Island, Secretary-Treasurer for Sport PEI, Vice-President Finance and Administration for the 1991 Canada Winter Games and member of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation.
Mark Ledwell, Board Member
Mark Ledwell is a partner in Gowlings’ Toronto office, specializing in business law with a particular emphasis in the fields of construction, energy, infrastructure and project finance. Prior to joining Gowlings, Ledwell served as Chief Operating Officer and general counsel to a leading civil contractor in Canada. He has over ten years experience in Public-Private Partnerships and infrastructure projects, including the design, building, financing, operation and maintenance of the Trans Canada Highway in New Brunswick, and the financing and construction of the Deh Cho Bridge in the Northwest Territories. Mark has also participated as a lawyer and executive in a number of major developments in Canada, including the Confederation Bridge, Highway 63 in Northern Alberta, several oil sands projects in Canada’s Athabasca Oil Sands, the Maritimes and Northeast Pipeline in Atlantic Canada, arterial highway projects in a number of municipalities, nuclear and hydro power generation, electricity transmission and wind farm developments throughout eastern Canada. In addition, Mark has significant operating experience in a number of key industries, including forestry, agri-food, the fishery, waste management, precision machining, steel fabrication, mining transportation and manufacturing. Mr. Ledwell currently serves as a director of several public and private companies and non-for-profit organizations in Canada.
Maryam Khodadadi, PhD Food Science, Research Lead
Dr. Khodadadi is a graduate from McGill University, in Food Science and Agricultural Chemistry. She carried out her postdoctoral research at McGill University before joining Solarvest (PEI) Inc. research and development group. Dr. Khodadadi has acquired expertise in the innovation and the synthesis of functional food ingredients and nutraceuticals, using "green" biotechnological approaches. Her research work has been based on a multidisciplinary approach combining food chemistry and enzyme technology for synthesizing and characterizing specialty lipids as well as bioactive carbohydrates from yeast cells. Her work has been aimed at the investigation of the synergistic actions of selected biocatalysts to develop novel bioprocesses for the synthesis of structurally well-defined bioactive molecules, with unique functional properties.
Garth Greenham, Chief Operations Officer
Garth Greenham, COO has an extensive record with both privately-held and publicly-traded heath care companies. He served as President of the global aquaculture division Novartis Inc. He started his career with Johnson & Johnson (J&J) where he served 15 years mostly with McNeil Pharmaceutical in numerous management positions in Operations. He joined Cobequid Life Sciences Inc. (KQR) and served as Director of Sales, Marketing & Operations for nine years and helped grow the company to global leader in the field of aquaculture animal vaccines.
Michael McDougall, Team Engineering Lead
Michael McDougall serves as Solarvest Inc.’s Team Engineering Lead on Prince Edward Island. Having earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Prince Edward Island as well as his Engineering Degree in Biological Engineering from Dalhousie University, McDougall is a qualified leader for Solarvest Inc.’s new ventures on Prince Edward Island.
Dr. Angela Riveroll, PhD Molecular Biology
A Research Scientist with a PhD in Molecular Biology, Dr. Angela Riveroll, will be considered an asset as Solarvest Inc. does extensive work with molecular organisms, especially in algae hydrogen generation. She earned her Ph. D from Dalhousie University where she received training in microbiology, immunology and molecular biology. Dr. Riveroll was employed as a project manager and product development manager with Novartis Animal Health for five years where she led teams involved in the research, development and registration of biologic products for the animal health industry.
Other production staff consists of a engineering Technician, Research Technician and three Laboratory Technicians. The expansion of Solarvest Inc.’s production facilities on Prince Edward Island will require additional staffing of a production technician in year one and an additional technician in year two. As well, a production manager overseeing projects will also be included in the financial planning.
